This site is built using Astro. I chose it because it isn't React-based (which I spend a lot of my day job writing) but React-like enough that I could get up and running quickly. I've followed Astro for years and love what its maintainers are doing in this very crowded web framework space. For the most part the site plain ol' HTML and CSS with minimal JavaScript, and a sprinkling of Astro goodness.
The site is published every time a change is merged to the main branch of this repo using Netlify's very slick Github integration.Typographical
I use three different fonts on the site:
One of them is Bungee, designed by David Jonathan Ross. It's a typeface that's inspired by the neon signs you might find in any city. Bungee's specific use case is vertical typography, but I love it for horizontal usage as well. I use it as my "display" font.
Another is Bitter, which I use as my "serif" font, and the primary font you'll see on the site. Bitter is designed by Huerta Tipografica. It's a font designed for reading on the screen and e-ink readers.
Finally, as my "sans-serif" font I use Barlow Condensed, designed by Jeremy Tribby. I use this one in the navigation menu, the date stamp on the blog page, and various other places. Barlow is a grotesk type family, inspired by "the visual style of the California public".
The fonts are all served by Bunny Fonts using Astro's fonts API. And yes, I know they all start with the letter B.
